The United States is the wealthiest nation in the world. Most Americans are struggling with the problem of having too much food. But for 9.6 million Americans, including 3 million children, hunger is a reality, and ever since the economic downturn in 2001, is on the rise.
The face of hunger in the United States looks different than it does in other parts of the world. America's hungry often have housing and are employed. But they work in jobs that are low paying and do not cover the costs of mortgages or rent, healthcare, utility bills, transportation, and food.
Because the food that is available to America's hungry is often processed and of such poor quality and limited variety, many are suffering from the effects of malnutrition, ironically including obesity.
The US does have social programs like food stamps, school lunches and food banks to provide food for the poor, but it clearly is not enough.
