hunger in numbers
  • More than 800 million people go to bed hungry every day.
  • 6 million children die from hunger each year-every time you take a breath, another child in a poor country is dying from hunger-related causes.
  • By this time tomorrow, 15,000 more children will have died unnecessarily of hunger.
  • Every third preschool child is malnourished and does not grow to his or her full potential-the physical damage from hunger to the brain and body of a child is permanent and will last throughout that child's lifetime.
  • Hunger is the single biggest cause of health problems in the world.
  • Even in the U.S., 36.3 million people - including 13 million children - live in households that go hungry part of the time.
  • Hunger is the most extreme form of poverty. In the developing world, more than 1.2 billion people currently live below the international poverty line, earning less than $1 per day.
  • The United States spends only 0.12% of GDP -- one-eighth of one percent -- in overseas economic aid.
  • The United States could help reduce world hunger by 50% by the year 2015, and eliminate it by 2025, at a cost of as little as two cents per American per day.
