When the need for food is a life and death matter environmental concerns seemingly pale by comparison. A side effect of poverty is environmental degradation. In search of more crop land and better soil, poor farmers expand their fields into forest and hillsides.
With better seeds, and education and resources to improve their soil, farmers can get higher yields from smaller plots, preserving the forests and biodiversity around them.
The lives and livelihoods of the poor and hungry, most of whom live in rural areas, are closely connected to the health of their environment. More than one billion people lack access to safe drinking water and more than two billion lack sanitation.
