education
There are an estimated 799 million illiterate adults in the world. They are disproportionately located in poor countries and about two-thirds of them are women.
Barriers to education have to do with access, affordability and physical health. Because of cultural prejudices against educating women, many girls are denied education. Many poor people cannot afford to send their children to school. Often children who start school are forced to drop out and work instead to contribute to the family income and survival. For those few lucky poor children who do attend school, malnutrition can interfere with concentration and learning.
All the experts agree that one of the important keys to reducing poverty is to give people equal access and participation in quality education, particularly girls and women. With education, people have the means to earn an income. Once they have a reliable income, the vicious cycle of poverty is broken.
