discrimination against women
Women are seventy percent of the world's poor and sixty percent of illiterate adults. Traditional and cultural laws systematically deny women resources, information and freedom.
Despite persistent discrimination, it is women who hold the key to ending hunger, because they are primarily responsible for child rearing, family planning, nutrition, health, education, food production, and family income.
When women have good nutrition, they give birth to healthy babies. When women have more education, they have fewer and healthier children. When women have access to loans and microcredit, they create more income for the family. When women have more voice in their community, they shift the agenda towards meeting basic human needs.
Access to healthcare, education, and financial resources drastically affect the lives of women and thereby the well-being of their families, their communities, and the society as a whole. A survey of 89 nations by the Center for Partnership Studies shows that the status of women can be a better predictor of the general quality of life than a nation's financial wealth.
Empowering women and girls is critical to ending poverty and hunger.
